Adnan Abel, MD, MBA

  • Class of 2009
  • Internal Medicine
  • Associate Professor
  • Kuwait University
  • Safat, Kuwait
In 1983 Dr. Abel got his medical degree from Kuwait University and in 1991 he graduated from the University of Toronto with a fellowship in pulmonary medicine. When Dr. Adnan returned back home after the first Gulf War the responsibility given to him by the ministry of health was huge. He had to develop state of the art respiratory unit and study the effect of oil well fire. Despite the difficulty of bureaucracy in the third world, he accomplished his task with reasonable success. After 10 years Dr. Adnan was given the opportunity to be the medical director of a private hospital and with the help of highly motivated employees he was successful in making the hospital one of the top health care providers in Kuwait. Aware of new competitors entering the market and with the collapse of Kuwait public hospitals that will be privatized, PEMBA will help Dr. Adnan to gain powerful managerial knowledge and skills to continue to be one of the top medical leaders in the country and face the new challenges, by either opening a consultation office or becoming an executive for an important hospital.

Julie Kavanaugh, MD, MBA

  • Class of 2009
  • Radiology
  • Office Manager
  • The Alaska Bone & Joint Institute
  • Anchorage, AK
Dr. Kavanaugh attended the University of California-Davis for her undergraduate work. She then made her way to Chicago where she went to The Chicago Medical School and graduated in 1996. After this she then completed an internship at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee. From there, she moved to Columbus, Ohio, to do her radiology residency at the Ohio State University, completing it in 2001. She moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in 2002. Dr. Kavanaugh spent three years away from medicine to enjoy her young children. In 2005, she became a full-time office manger at The Alaska Bone & Joint Institute, where she was instrumental in bringing in an EMR system. Since her time as an office manager, she has realized how little medical school and residency prepared a physician to think beyond treating patients. Dr. Kavanaugh is enrolled in this program as she believes it will give her the opportunity to become a physician who understands both medicine and business, which in today's economy is becoming extremely valuable.
