Ben Alvarez, M.D.-
Dr. Alvarez is an Ob/Gyn in private practice in Little
Falls, Minnesota, where he is the co-director of the Women's
Specialty Clinic. He was born and raised in New York and
completed an Internal Medicine, as well as, Ob/Gyn residency
at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to
moving to Minnesota, he was the medical director of one of
the largest private groups in Northeast Ohio. Along with
former PEMBA classmate Dr. Tim Stover, he developed the
concept of the "Practice Administrative Fee" for non-covered
non-medical services. Dr. Alvarez is a Certified Physician
Executive through the ACPE and holds a law degree from
Madison University. He is presently serving in the Air Force
Reserves and is the author of the book "Simple Poems for
Simple Men: What to say when you've got to say
something...". His second book, "The Philosophy of Success",
is nearing completion.
Bernard Ng, M.D.-
Dr. Ng recently opened his own practice in upstate New York.
Previously, he was a partner at a hospital based, private
practice pathology group. The nature of his specialty places
him at the crossroad of many medical disciplines. Among his
many responsibilities are the management of laboratory
resources and personnel. Prior to his decision to pursue a
MBA education, his experience in “management” included
service as chief resident in a residency of twelve
physicians from diverse backgrounds. His interest in
teaching and desire to create a cohesive group with similar
goals and converging ideas made that job a particularly
rewarding one. Dr. Ng enjoys fly-fishing, hiking, and
photography. Since completing the Physician EMBA program,
Dr. Ng reports that he “...is enjoying work in a way I’ve
never thought possible.”
Richard Robin, DO MPH-
Dr. Robin is currently a board certified psychiatrist with a
background in Internal Medicine and Public Health. He
currently holds the position of Medical Director of a mental
health/substance abuse facility in Connecticut. Dr. Robin is
also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Brown University
School of Medicine. Dr. Robin is a member of many
professional organizations including The American
Psychiatric Association, The American Public Health
Association and The American Association of Partial
Hospitalization.
Chris Garrison, M.D.-
Dr. Garrison graduated from Texas A & M and completed his
postgraduate education at The University of Texas Medical
Branch in Galveston. He is currently a member physician at
the Baylor University Medical Center. He is a member of
several professional societies including The American Pain
Society, The American Association of Electrodiagnostic
Medicine and The American Academy of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation. The diversity of physician activity was the
single most important factor in his eventual commitment to
medicine. Dr. Garrison says, "I have known mechanical
engineers, NASA astronauts, and bench researchers, all of
whom owe much of their success to the skills acquired in the
physician training process and the same is true for me".
Pinar Senlet, M.D.-Dr.
Senlet is a native of Turkey and graduated from Hacettepe
Medical School in Ankara. She pursued a post graduate degree
in Public Health with an emphasis on health care management
and maternal and child health care. After completing her
residency, she taught public health and in 1990 joined the
U.S. Agency for International Development as the Agency's
representative in Turkey. Since that time, she has assumed
responsibility over USAIDS's $5 million per year health and
population assistance program in Turkey. Under this program,
USAID funds the activities of five large projects, which
include clinical training, management assistance, quality of
care improvement, policy work and research in health care.
Barry Henderson, M.D.-
Dr. Henderson is a native of metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia,
but is practicing in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia for Resource
Sciences Arabia, Ltd. He is a graduate of the Medical
College of Georgia. After completing the first year of a
family practice residency in Charleston, South Carolina, he
practiced Emergency Medicine for eight years at major north
Atlanta hospitals, followed by several years in urgent care.
He then served as Medical Director of a major suburban
Humana MedFirst facility. Subsequently, he owned a general
practice in Marietta, Georgia which grew to become a
two-location, three-physician success. He has served on the
boards of a number of respected non-profit organizations in
Atlanta, including that as founding president of The
International Club of Atlanta and as founding president of a
major unit of the American Cancer Society. Other adventures
include being the on-air physician for the successful
television show PM Magazine; having his own weekly two-hour
radio show for two years on NewsRadio640 WGST, Atlanta; and
serving as a Ship’s Doctor in the Caribbean.
Tim Stover, M.D.-
Dr. Stover graduated from West Virginia University where he
trained as an OB/GYN. He currently resides in Akron Ohio.
His professional interests center around resident teaching
in OB/GYN and the "business of medicine" as well as
prevention and wellness services. Dr. Stover was involved
in the development of the Health and Wellness Center, a
198,000 square foot facility in Akron Ohio. This facility
offers outpatient clinical services, including diagnostic
and surgical services, physicians' offices and an award
winning medical fitness center. Dr. Stover has completed
numerous courses developed for experienced executives and
has been honored to receive many teaching awards from the
residents at both hospitals where he practices.
Ray Howell, M.D.-Dr.
Howell resides in Atlanta Georgia where he is a board
certified obstetrician/gynecologist. He is currently the CEO
and owner of East Atlanta OB/GYN Associates, PC. This
private medical care facility for total women's healthcare
was started in 1993. Since then, another facility has been
opened and the total medical care and business team
comprises over 17 employees, including doctors, nurse
practitioners, nurse midwives , technicians and
administrative staff. Prior to starting this new business
Dr. Howell was the physician leader for the department of
OB/GYN for Kaiser Permanente.
Jean Stretton, M.D. -
After completing her MBA, Dr. Stretton became president of
Gateway Medical Associates, a physician owned corporation
consisting of 18 physicians and 7 nurse
practitioners/physician assistants in 6 different locations.
She is also working with a large local insurer in a joint
venture to improve the outpatient care of elderly members,
in order to decrease the cost and morbidity of frequent
hospitalizations.
Fareed Khouqeer, M.D.- Dr.
Khouqeer is a practicing cardio-thoracic surgeon at King
Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia. One of his achievements includes starting a
new venture in the form of 200-bed hospital with a cardiac
surgery program that has tertiary pediatric service. This
means leading efforts to establish a blood bank, critical
care unit, CSSD as well as building teams. He was the
Executive Director of Medical & Clinical Operations and a
cardiac consultant in that facility.
Dr. Khouqeer envisions himself as a leader with many hats,
and his charge is to identify opportunities and facilitate
change as an Executive Management Consultant. He also
continues to lead and strive for a very high quality heart
surgery service as a cardiac surgery consultant, by virtue
of his training as a heart surgeon in one of the best North
American institutes.
Stephen Vitkun, M.D., Ph.D.- Dr.
Vitkun is Professor and Vice Chairman of Anesthesiology,
Professor of Pharmacological Sciences and Professor of
Clinical Health Sciences at the State University of New York
at Stony Brook. He is a diplomate of the American Board of
Anesthesiology, the American Academy of Pain Management and
the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization
Review Physicians. He is also a Certified Clinical Research
Investigator. Dr. Vitkun's activities include teaching of
residents, medical students and students in other health
sciences programs. He has been very active in the
integration of medical simulators into clinical teaching and
quality programs. Dr. Vitkun's
research interests have led to him authoring or co-authoring
over 90 manuscripts, books, abstracts or book chapters. He
is also active in state and national anesthesiology
societies having served on many standing committees and as a
member of the Board of Directors of the New York state
Society of Anesthesiologists.
Brian Lenz, M.D.-
A native Californian, Dr. Lenz, earned a B.S. in biology at
UCLA and his M.D. at the University of California, Davis.
After completing a family practice residency, he worked for
a large multi-specialty group in Northern California for
four years. In 1997 he moved to Morenci, AZ where and
established a private practice Dr. Lenz has held various
leadership positions including medical director of the
Morenci Health Care Center and medical director of two
hospice programs. In 2004 he was appointed Medical Director
for Jefferson Memorial Hospital's Emergency Department in
Crystal City, Missouri.
David Wallace, M.D.-
Dr. Wallace graduated from the University of Louisville
School of Medicine and currently operates a private practice
of Family Medicine in Shelbyville Kentucky. Prior to that,
he served as a member of the Board of Trustees at Jewish
Hospital in Shelbyville. A member of several professional
organizations, he has served in various positions, including
Trustee of the Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians and
delegate to the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure. In
addition, Dr. Wallace teaches Medical Students from the
University of Louisville during their Community Based
Primary Care rotations. In his spare time, Dr. Wallace
enjoys flying, tennis and technical analysis of equity
markets.
Michael Marks, M.D.- Dr.
Marks is a practicing orthopedic surgeon and President of
Coastal Orthopedics, PC, Norwalk, CT, who resides in Weston
Connecticut. He has held many leadership positions at
Norwalk Hospital and currently is the Assistant Chief of
Staff. He sits on the Board of Trustees and serves on the
Quality and Finance Committees. He currently the President
of the Connecticut Orthopedic Society and has been leading
the movement both locally and nationally for medical
liability reform. He has been honored with the Malcolm
Beinfield Award for teaching Physician Assistant Residents
as well as being the Magida Award Nominee from Norwalk
Hospital which recognizes outstanding physicians under the
age of 40 who have been dedicated to the field of medicine
both in practice and in the community. He is a consultant
for Kyphon Inc, a medical device company focused on the
design, manufacture and marketing of instruments used in
minimally invasive therapies for surgeons and their patients
for the restoration of spinal anatomy. Additional activities
include Vice President of the Weston High School Boosters
Club and serving as the on field physician for the Weston
High School Football team.
